The Revitalised Central Market Finally Opens for Business

After over three years of construction and no small amount of anticipation, the new Central Market is finally open for business, baby! With more than 100 retail and F&B spaces, the revived market (which shut down 18 years ago) promises to be a platform for local brands and startups, giving lesser-known names a welcome spotlight in this enviable downtown location. The historic building from 1939 occupies an entire city block between Des Voeux Road and Queen’s Road Central, covering a staggering 122,000 square feet. Some of the retailers already setting up shop there include Slowood, Bathe to Basics, and vegan dessert purveyor So Coco. The market is also serving up a big side of nostalgia, with traditional street snacks, retro souvenir stores and even modern interpretations of traditional convenience stores selling everything from sweets to snacks. There’s also an atrium designed for community events, complete with sound systems, projector and seating, and restrictions permitting, plans to host plenty of exhibitions, tours and workshops throughout the year. We love!
